The reflection of a belief

Updated: Dec 22, 2022

A strong image of belief

The idea

During a visit to Lake Major (Lago Maggiore) in Italy, we walked through a villa full of beautiful vistas. The views were so breathtaking, everything seemed to come out of a fairytale. It truly is one of the most soothing places in Italy.

In one of those views, I fell upon this cross. The window provided me with a second frame inside of the first, and helped give a deeper meaning to the picture.

Everything in life is about a point of view. Two people can live the same event and yet see it in two very opposing ways. Religion is strange, not because of the many myths and mysteries behind each story that is told, but rather because of how personal it is. Everyone can live such a different experience of the same religion. It's at the core of all the beautiful exchanges intra and inter-religion, but also the genesis of all our conflicts, because it's hard to accept differences. It's not reassuring to know someone else sees the same thing as you with a very different eye. What can the other do, say or think in this or that situation? Are we fighting for the same goals, or are our dreams divergent? Can they understand me, or are our cultures so dissimilar that trying to understand each other is vain?

Beliefs are powerful, religions are merely mediums to express our beliefs, and sometimes what we see is the reflection of a religion we thought we knew. I am so often baffled by the conflicting opinions that can come out of one religion although they all preach a message of communion. Maybe, instead of focusing on religion, we should focus on beliefs and spirituality.

The technique

The only tecnicity in this picture is the one that comes with the artistic experience. Seeing life with a different lens is the power of any artist, and that's the sensitivity I believe I've transmitted through the expression of the picture.

I opened the aperture to a maximum to give as much bokeh as possible, and then I just had to play with the shutter speed in order to ensure stability and luminosity.
